Common SEO Mistakes to Avoid

Within SEO, there are so-called black hat SEO techniques or common SEO mistakes to avoid that go against Google’s guidelines. There are some off-page techniques penalized by Google and that we do not recommend that you use to position your website. So if you’re using them, it’s time to rethink your web positioning strategy. We know you want to increase your rankings and traffic but believe us, there are no shortcuts and SEO is an incredibly long process which must be done right the whole way through.

Purchasing Links

The purchase of links is an artificial way to earn links and therefore it is a technique that we should not use as it is penalized if you are caught. This penalty can apply to both those who buy and who sell links. Google wants you to acquire links naturally and purchasing them is considered to be cheating in their eyes.

Common SEO Mistakes to Avoid

Traffic Networks

Run away from the Traffic Networks. Some companies have a network of well-positioned websites that offer relevant links that can help us improve positions, but in the long run, it can be counterproductive. The reason is that these websites can link you to websites with very different content to yours or in websites with many links, and the more links a website has, the less value each one of them will have. In addition, Google considers many traffic networks as farm links.

Link Farms

Link Farms are web pages that offer many paid links to point to your blog or website and get a lot of visibility. The purpose is to increase the popularity of web pages since the more links point to the same website, the higher its positioning in search engines.

The link farms had their heyday, being used by spammers and large SEO agencies. But as of 2009, it began to warn about the dangers of this SEO strategy off page and today a link from this strategy is seriously penalized since it is based on the number of links rather than quality.

The penalty of this technique culminated with the arrival of the Panda and Penguin algorithms.

Link Exchanges

Another technique that is no longer used is the exchange of links between websites of the same theme. This technique consisted of contacting the webmaster of websites on the same subject as ours and offering them a mutual link. These links were placed in pages or located on the sidebar or the footer of the pages. But Google does not like the exchange of links, because it goes against its policy. Google likes that we generate quality content, which will be linked to by other pages because they are good and interesting

With the arrival of the Jagger algorithm update in 2005, the links of the link exchange networks and the purchased links ceased to have value.

Link Wheels

The link wheel technique is a technique to improve SEO by creating link connections that link from one web to another in order to give full force to a specific webpage.

The technique was to include articles related to the theme of our website on free platforms such as and in turn, create several links in social bookmarks and directories that point to these free blogs. This way, all the links went in a single direction forming a kind of link wheel whose main target was a specific webpage to try and boost it from the power of the wheel.

But like a lot of ‘black hat’ techniques, Google began to identify the link structures of this technique and penalized some websites using them as a result.

Link Automation

Automated link building or the automation of links is a technique in which the link building strategy is left in the hands of a software that leaves comments on blogs accompanied by a link such as GSA SER, FCS Networker or Scrapebox. This technique caused the birth of the captchas and the application of the “nofollow” attribute for the links in comments.

To combat it, the Penguin algorithm was born and began to penalize it.

Google Bowling

This technique consists of improving positions in the results pages (SERP), by removing a competitor from the Google search results. To do this, instead of focusing on our page, the strategy was based on discrediting the competition through low-quality and unreliable links pointing to their website.

Google Bombing

his technique involves manipulating search results using a large number of links to a site with a certain keyword as anchor text.

This technique was used to discredit some public figures such as George W. Bush, so that if you looked for the phrase “miserable failure”, the White House website appeared in the first place of the search results.

Guest Posting

Guest posting is an off page SEO technique that we can use to position our website. It consists of contacting webmasters to publish an article on their website in exchange for inserting a link to our site inside the article.

The webmaster ends up getting a free article for their website, but the problem comes when we create poor quality articles and publish on sites without authority or thematic relevance so low-quality Guest Blogging thrives, but not the good quality with natural, quality, original and valuable content. Guest blogging is an approved technique by good, it jsut needs to be done right according to their guidelines.

Article Directories

Article directories consisted of sending articles with some variations and changes to get inbound links. Currently and due to their inappropriate use, these directories no longer add value.

Websites such as EzineArticles got spammed to death by webmasters trying to get backlinks to their sites and this technique died a long time ago.
